Relatives embrace the frequent duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of dying and human-like body temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive feminine flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to collapse, the "fragrance" fades and the bugs begin to go out. As they leave, the beetles rub up in opposition to the pollen in the male flowers and at the moment are ready to hold the pollen to a close-by feminine flower. Only a handful of these unusual Indonesian vegetation bloom each year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the only identified backyard in the region that grows this exotic species.
