Relatives include the frequent duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of demise and human-like physique temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like construction and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to break down, the "perfume" fades and the insects start to head out. As they depart, the beetles rub up against the pollen in the male flowers and at the moment are ready to carry the pollen to a close-by female flower.
